At What Speed Does Trailer Sway Start and how to prevent it?
While sway is more common at highway speeds (typically 45–70 mph), it can start below 40 mph and, in extreme cases, even at lower speeds if conditions are right.
Most anti-sway hitches use friction or resistance to reduce sway after it begins, but the Ultimate Hensley Arrow hitch uses a patented design that stops your trailer from shifting side to side—no matter the conditions.

Improper tongue weight
-
Trailer length and height
-
Wind or passing trucks
-
Sudden steering inputs
-
Uneven loading or shifting cargo
-
Suspension or tire issues
-
Below 40 mph:
Sway is less common but can occur with severe imbalance, strong wind, or sudden maneuvers. -
45–55 mph:
This is where many drivers first notice sway starting, especially on open roads or in crosswinds. -
60–70 mph:
Sway becomes more dangerous because oscillations grow faster and are harder to correct. -
Above 70 mph:
Small sway events can escalate rapidly into loss of control.
Speed does not cause sway—it determines how fast it becomes dangerous. Read more trailer sway facts.

Wind gusts

Passing semi-trucks

Lane changes or overcorrection
-
Downhill braking
-
Road irregularities
-
Light braking can worsen sway
-
Steering corrections can amplify oscillations
-
Friction-based systems may react too late
-
Change the trailer’s effective pivot point
-
Prevent side-to-side motion from developing

Maintain stability across a wider range of speeds
Yes. Sway can occur below 40 mph if the trailer is poorly loaded or affected by strong external forces.
No. Speed amplifies sway but does not cause it. Instability and trailer pivot are the root causes.
Slowing down may reduce severity, but it does not always stop sway once it has started.
