What are the tips to hook up the Hensley Arrow and Cub?

Hooking Up Tips and Techniques - Follow these steps to hook up.

  1. Make sure your trailer tires are chocked!
  2. Your weight distribution should still be in the relaxed position.
  3. Insert the hitch bar in your truck, and back up to get close to the hitch box opening on the Hensley. Do not try to hook up yet. When you are close, compare the angle of the hitch bar to the up and down angle of the hitch box opening.
  4. If the up and down angle of the hitch box does not match the hitch bar you will need to adjust the screw jacks on the Original Arrow or adjust the spring bar support rods on the Swift version. Think of your spring bars like the handles of a wheelbarrow. When you pull the spring bars up, the hitch head will tilt down. When you press down on the spring bars the hitch head will point upward. Change the up and down angle of the hitch box to match the angle of the hitch bar sticking out of the back of your vehicle
  5. Use your tongue jack to get to the height of your hitch bar to be the proper height to enter the hitch box opening.
  6. When you are satisfied with the height and angle, go ahead and back into the hitch box and close the latches on the front of the hitch.
  7. You will need to enter the hitch box fairly square right and left. If the bar doesn’t go all the way into the hitch box you may need to pull forward and move the front wheels of the truck over a little to make the vehicle more in line with the trailer.
  8. If the hitch bar goes almost all the way into the hitch box but lacks the last inch you may be able to use the over center latches to pull the hitch bar the rest of the way into the hitch box opening.

What are some unhooking tips and techniques?

Follow these steps to unhook:

Here's a short video: Click here to watch

  1. Make sure your trailer tires are chocked!
  2. Extend your tongue jack until it comes in contact with the ground then go about another inch.
  3. Release your weight distribution. For those with the Swift version, release the snap up brackets to let the chains fall, and lower your spring bar support rods to capture the spring bars. For the Original version, lower the screw jacks until they are sloppy loose.
  4. Extend your tongue jack further until there is no longer any weight on the back of the vehicle.
  5. As you are extending the tongue jack, place your finger where the hitch bar connects into the truck receiver and feel the hitch bar shift inside the truck receiver. When you feel it shift, that’s when you know there is no longer any weight on the back of the vehicle. Now you are ready to unhook.
  6. Pull forward carefully.

How do you properly use weight distribution with a Hensley hitch?

Weight distribution with a Hensley hitch is easy. The weight distribution aspect of the hitch is completely separate from the sway elimination aspect of the hitch.

Even if you forgot to pull up the weight distribution, your trailer will NEVER sway.

When you set up your weight distribution, you are looking for a couple things. You want to minimize the bouncing between your truck and trailer, and you want to have good, firm, positive steering.

Read your owner’s manual carefully for instructions on first setting up your weight distribution. If you use an air lift system in your truck, inflate those first to where you like them to be. Then use the weight distribution to get a good ride.

Should I be concerned about tongue weights?

Tongue weights are a concern for many customers, but for a Hensley owner it really shouldn’t be. When you have a conventional sway control hitch, too much or too little tongue weight can cause a lot of instability in your trailer.

The Hensley Hitch will completely eliminate trailer sway and fishtailing regardless of how much or how little tongue weight your trailer has.

Other customers are concerned about getting close to the tongue weight rating of their vehicle. We as a company will never recommend exceeding either the tongue weight or tow weight ratings of your vehicle. Some people decide to exceed these ratings and if they do we recommend getting the safest hitch available to insure their safety.

The tongue weight rating on your vehicle does not include the weight of any hitch. The vehicle manufacturer has no idea what hitch a person might use so they do not factor in the weight of a hitch in their tongue weight rating. Yes the Hensley installs on the front of the trailer and remains there but that does not mean you need to include it in the tongue weight rating of your vehicle.

The overall weight of a Hensley Hitch is about 70 lbs. more than a conventional sway control hitch. The difference in weight is not that significant, but the difference in your stability on the highway is absolutely profound.

Using weight distribution on any hitch will spread the tongue weight out more evenly across both axels of your vehicle and both axels of the trailer. It will smooth out the ride, but it will not change the amount of the tongue weight you have. The weight is still there but it is spread out across the entire length of your rig.

How do I grease the Hensley Hitch ball?
Can I exchange my hitch bar for free?

You only need to exchange your Hensley Hitch bar when the difference between your truck receiver and trailer tongue changes by more than 2″. This only happens when you buy a new truck or new trailer. And even in those cases, most of our customers find they can use the same hitch bar. You do not need to exchange your hitch bar if you buy new tires for truck or trailer, or if you change the air-pressure.

When you buy a new tow vehicle or trailer, simply take the measurement from the ground to the top of the receiver on the truck, then from the ground to the top of the coupler on the trailer, just like you did when you bought your new Arrow or Cub.

When you have these measurements, you can use our hitch bar calculator to determine your new hitch bar size.

When you receive your new hitch bar, simply put your old hitch bar in the same box and ship it back to us. You’ll be refunded your deposit upon receipt of the old hitch bar. All you’ve paid is shipping.

The few owners who do exchange hitch bars usually only do it once. Rarely do we see one owner exchanging hitch bars more than one time.

Should I go to the CAT scales?

The Hensley Hitch will totally eliminate trailer sway regardless of how you distribute the tongue weight. To set up the weight distribution on a Hensley Hitch you should pull up the spring bars until you get a nice smooth ride and stop the bouncing up and down between your vehicle and trailer. This setup will also provide good positive steering on the front axle as well. In other words, if you have a nice smooth ride with good positive steering and absolutely NO SWAY then it is set up correctly. Get out there and enjoy your Hensley Hitch and tow safely. Questions?
